4Kids' Confusing Censors

So everyone knows how, whenever English text appears in the show 4Kids removes it and replace it with a symbol or picture because God forbid it would give children a chance to read. I mean, it's rather odd when a closed sign for a game shop is that typical red circle with a slash as though it were to say "Games are bad for you!". But anyway, I was watching Cr@apsule Monsters when I realized that, at around 52 seconds, the "closed" sign on Yugi's house actually said, in plain English, "Closed". I found this rather odd, cause of 4Kids' ongoing war on reading. So, they "censor" English text in the original show, but if it's by their own creation, it's A.O.K!?

Feel free to comment.

These are the same people who think eating onigiri send kids to hell. 4Kids censors stuff for no reason.

Because 4Kids censors have blown a brain gasket.

Everybody knows that 4Kiddies live on another planet. However, they haven't realised that this is Earth.

thats because unlike the normal Yu-Gi-Oh series, craphole monsters was made by 4kids (or at least they were the ones who had control of the content) so they were the ones who created it, which also explains why it sucked so badly! except of course for the spoof LK made.

They also remove a lot of religious and occult iconagraphy too, which is why I'm suprised the Seal of Oreichalcos survived intact.

I was shocked they got away with Egyptian god card

Y'know what's funny? When I was a kid, they had commercials all over the place to get kids "wild about reading"

Nowadays, they don't care if children are illiterate, as long as they make good choices when they go to McDonalds or Burger King. Which they really shouldn't be eating at in the first place. (At least not on a daily/weekly basis)

But yeah, 4kids...alot of times I can agree with the stuff they censor, but censoring a sign that says "Closed"??

And another thing- even though Yu-Gi-Oh has children's card games, the show itself isn't nessisarily targeted toword children, especially in Japan, since adults watch it too. So WHY do 4kids insist on translating it in the first place? I mean, that's like trying to take a show with violent and adult themes, like say, a show about Pirates, and passing it for a kiddie show...oh wait, they already do that: ONE PIECE.

Yesah, Editing gets WAY out of hand. They did get away with a lot of stuff though. like the Seal of Orichalchos, and the Egyptian God Cards. However, I think that they edited the symbol that Exodia rises out of in the Millenium World arc. It was a pentagram but then they changed it...

Really? What did they changed it to? I can't seem to remember..

Would this possibly have some kind of controversy to do with sports teams?

Okay, I'm glad they do not have One Piece anymore. They changed a black guy to pink for the love of god.

It's not about counting, not at all. You see the number five is evil, or at least can be related to evil. How you ask? Very simple, there is a band called Ben Folds Five[notice the evil number! notice it and tremble!] and they have a song called Satan is My Master.

We can't chance children somehow learning about the number five and then learning about that song and then becoming satanists, no matter how unlikely it is.

4kids is protecting the world from lame arse joke songs and satanism all at once! You just gotta respect that...even if it makes children incredibly stupid and illiterate.

As fun as it is to hate on 4Kids, you should know that the network enforces most of the stupid changes, as most BS & P (Broadcast Standards and Practices) departmens are full of nut jobs. The censors are especially strict for Y/Y-7 rated childrens programming.

And the problem with 4kids doing One Piece is they intended to air it on their leased Saturday morning Fox time, not Saturday night Cartoon Network/Adult Swim. But even Funimation will replace Sanji's cig with a lollipop!

That doesn't explain why the censored the stuff we're talking about. Try reading the the first post at least.

Well, I assume that 4kids wants to make sure that children aren't confused by Japanese symbols such as this mysterious "5".

Even though these changes are really unnecessary, they don't really hurt anyone now that they did take it out. As far as Egyptian Gods go, most parents, I think, wouldn't really take it too seriously because uh, well, the Ancient Egyptian gods are from a civilization that's pretty much gone by now (Or rather, the religion, at least.). Kind of like Greek Mythology, I know kids can read that stuff all they want, since everyone can get away saying it's fake because nobody these days is a Hellenist.

Personally I think 4kids is one of the better studios. Other than the fact that they censor for obvious reasons explained in their name, reyalfonso is right in that a lot of these stupid censorship comes from other departments anyway. 4kids has some of the best American VAs (at least to me) in the business, like Maddie Blaustein.

Mysterious #5 Joey makes me laugh, though. Maybe there was something in the context that they didn't want to explain in the American show- though I'm probably reading too much into it.

The image on the left is 4Kids' edited version of Exodia's used-to-be-a-pentagon. The image on the right is the original. It looks more like a star than anything else.

Not sure if this is a censor but why do the cards on the show have no text and just numbers and symbols, how the heck are the characters suppose to know what the card dose?
JohnnyFive

To avoid translating realms of Japanese text.

Eh, pentagrams have a magical connotation to them, so I guess they just did it to prevent people from crying witch...craft. That happened with Harry Potter, so why not with ancient Egyptian laser beams?

Yeah, the cards used to have Japanese Text and all that fun stuff on them. That's basically why the movie's cards had words on them, since the movie was American-made.

I think, given the situation they're in, I would be censoring a lot too. People are more sue-happy than ever, and I think I'd rather be censoring stuff rather than having an oversensitive soccer mom sue my ass every 3 episodes.

I don't think they liked doing it in particular either- They did release the uncensored episodes for the die hard fans. Then they stopped for whatever reason.

They know what it does because they have magic powers to understand the complex meaning of a green dot..... apparently
the most rediculous edit IMO is the card edit of premature burial. here is the card....

and on the left hand side of this pic is the 4kids version

and another one is empty signs such as

i was thinking it the writing might be removed when exported from japan, so that all different countries could use the images and not have to bother translating the english signs.

no it was all 4Kids fault, they kill the animes and if you dare blame anyone else then everyone else will blame you

also i found some more edits as bad examples...
4kids version:
uncut:
BOOBIES!!

Japanese pegasus drinking some wine at the table:
english pegasus drinking.... fruit juice???

and finally
Japanese Seto looking at an overview of a duel on his computer
and English Seto in the same scene but with the names of the cards missing (realy obviously, you can tell that something is supposed to be there!)
