Next Gen = Short Games
|
| #1 Posted 4 months ago | Reply | Somewhere along the fighting for dominance in the gaming industry they seemed to have really screwed something up chronic in terms of lengthy gameplay. I currently own an xbox 360 and nintendo wii (in terms of the next gen consoles) and i play my mates PS3 quite alot aswell. Problem lately i tend to notice is that games in the 360 and PS3 invest in so much graphics and fancy cut scenes that their replay, "end game" or even basic story modes lack a hell of alot of lengthy gameplay.
As examples off the top of my head i can list a couple that were dreadfully short, Jericho, Too Human, Blacksite, Dead Rising, Halo 3, Assasins Creed even MGS4 was shorter than the PS2 and PS1 counterparts (imo at the very least). Unfortunately even with Blueray discs it seems potential gaming hours are being cropped off, but what about the Wii or PSP, they use the smaller discs and the games seem to last just enough time to be really enjoyable, even the NDS which still uses cartridge has some really potentially long games.
Matter of fact if it werent for the NDS (15+ games which i own, even more than i own for my 360 and wii put together) xbox live arcade and old school console emulators my free time would have been a bore fest. Whatever happened to multiple discs like FF 7/8/9, Abe's exoddus, Escape from monkey island, broken sword and other such fairly old games, sure the 360 is getting FF13 in 2CD's but only because it was meant for a blueray disc. Looks like next gen should really jump back abit and notice gameplay > graphics and leave all the graphical gameplay to PC games which can be as large as they really want it to be what with downloading, for example look at capcom with megaman 9, they seem to get the picture. Anybody noticed this aswell, or have games to add to the short list? |

Blue ray discs are multi layered so there is no need for more than one disc but i still understand your point! |

| #3 Posted 4 months ago, in reply to post #1 by bluecheese | Reply | Game companies realized that people will buy games regardless of length/plot/characters/originality. This new generation of games is exponentially worse than the last. This trend in putting graphics over content started with Sony, but Microsoft is the real offender. After the X-box was released, gaming went mainstream and brought with it the likes of Halo and its infinite clones. The over saturation of cookie-cutter shooting games and movie tie-ins lowered the standards of every game developer. The real problem is the ignorant last generation gamers who eat up anything with an mature content label and send the message that violence is a suitable replacement for quality content.
To put it simply, they just don't make games like they used to. As long as people buy the crap that's being put on the market, this will not get better. |

clones yes but the original halo was a satitsfying lenth and really can't be blamed for clones its like blaming WOW for all the rubbish MMORPG clones on the PC, other devolpers trying to claim some of that glory for themselfs but i admit this may have led to games being shorter. But then again what hasn't got shoter or smaller these days nothing seem be getting longer eccept the price tag. |

Mind you, for some reason PSP +NDS games (and i suppose a couple for the Wii) end up at a reasonable length with plenty of replay value, if we are lucky nintendo might keep gaming at a steady pace. |

| #6 Posted 4 months ago | Reply | I blame both the gamers and creators. The gamers are too scared to play something different from the generic, so they stick to clones of the good games and series that people know so well. The creators like where the funny is coming from so instead of trying to please their cries for help of an original game the creators just cough up another clone and call it a day.
It's a circle of life. with the gamers leading it. The gamers decide what the creator's make. Next time you hear about a "Halo" or "Gears of War" clone, don't buy it because you've already played it, and instead spend some money on old, original games like Jak and Daxter or Earthbound. Eventually a message will be given. |

| #7 Posted 4 months ago | Reply | I can see the point here, but there are still masses of games some people would consider cookie cutter that have been brilliant, Time Splitters: Future Perfect was blasted by nearly everyone as a Halo clone but personally I loved that it didn't take itself too seriously and thought everyone completely missed the appeal because they were expecting it to be Halo.
It's the same problem with everything now really though, there are so few things left to do that all companies can really do is tweak and improve existing concepts (*) but a lot of companies seem to think the way to do this is by improving graphics or adding epic cut scenes rather than working on characters and story or god forbid gameplay.
*Case in point - Spore. It's really just a RTS game with some new concepts, but it's bringing some stuff to the table to set itself apart from the mass of Command and Conquer clones.
There are some truly great new games coming out but like HeavyDDR said they just aren't getting the attention they deserve because most gamers keep buying the same old stuff so companies have no reason to stop making them. Why do you think EA get away with releasing a new NFL game every year or they keep making new Call of Duty games or new Guitar Hero? To be honest with Guitar Hero in particular they could probably just release a new song packs and charge less for them, but because they can charge twice that much for a boxed game they don't see any reason to. |

Although i think we can all agree the greatest halo clone of them all was Haze, aside from the name the whole concept is the same, fps in a robotic suit with yellow viser shooting aliens from space to defend the earth... oh yeah and both games are both short lived (actually i wouldnt know i havnt played halo 3, but i was told it was short, i played haze for the lools on the other hand)
Think the only lengthyish game i have on my xbox is Devil May Cry 4, just like its predecessors they stuck in 20ish missions with bloody palace, difficulty unlocks, a super mode, two playable characters, plenty of skill and weapon content and even managed to put in those really cool fight scenes along with a cool storyline. Props to that, and to their upcoming megaman 9 game, hope it sells well to start making an example, id love to play some more 2D sidescrollers like the old days. |

| #9 Posted 4 months ago | Reply | | I've not played Haze since it just looks like a sub par rip off of both Halo and Crysis. Neither of which was hugely original to begin with. Although Crysis did have the suit and possibly the best physics engine ever working in it's favour. |

You have clearly never played haze then! As there are only two sides, the copprate run jock type mantal soilders and the 'red hand' a group of (i want to say spanish but i could never tell) rebels, but yes its is a halo rip off, same heath and recover system, the mantel buggie might as well have been called the worthog just with out the ability to do cool doughnuts and loads more. Also haze is nothing like crysis, crysis was fun and the abilitys of the suit where actually useful not just make the enemy glow up!Time Splitters: Future Perfect was blasted by nearly everyone as a Halo clone
Really? future perfect was a really good game with a very enjoyable multiplayer and stands out for me, mainly because of the very very funny playable characters i loved the giant fried chicken and playing a sixteen player infection with both friends and bots was really fun. |

In all honesty just the multiplayer, i had just assumed the really fucked up people to be the aliens |

| #12 Posted 4 months ago | Reply | | It be true. Play Jak 3 and you'll get a very long fairly pretty tale of adventure. Play uncharted, and you get a fairly long, very pretty tale of adventure. games are simply getting shorter. And much easier aswell. |

Has anyone read the fourth edition DnD rules yet?
It's basically a shortened, worsened, dumber version of third, which was a less complicated version of second.
The games are getting worse too...
Baldur's Gate used 2nd edition, and was awesome in so many ways.
NWN used third, and it was terrible... |
