And now my explanation:
On the surface it would seem that this is just another use of an Abridged Series quote in a caption, which under normal circumstances would be markedly unoriginal and have no chance of winning. However, in this case the patent obviousness of the quote is present to a ridiculous degree, with seemingly so little thought put into it as to make it laughable, which, when placed against the backdrop of unoriginal caption contest entries, serves as a postmodern criticism of the current state of the caption-contest world, with bitter irony, highlighted by an enthusiastic facade, acting as a scathing criticism of poorly constructed caption contest entries, the lack of true benevolence in any aspect of humanity, and the futility of life itself. Furthermore, the use of such an outlandishly gimmicky catch-phrase serves to deprive the image of any valid meaning whatsoever, reducing any serious or dramatic implications the scene may have to a banal, senselessly optimistic general statement about the world which has no foundation in reality, and no meaningful philosophical implications. In fact, one may go so far as to call the caption irrelevent, which, when placed so obtrusively within the image, reduces the entire sight to a sort of farce or pantomime, a theater of the absurd, if you will, in which the meaningful and stoic behavior and postures of the persons depicted is juxtaposed with the unwarranted superficiality of the captioned statement, which clearly has no place in this serious context, thereby reducing the entire image to a charade, an inherently mocking imitation of itself, which serves to illustrate the corruption of all that is noble in modern society, thereby producing a cathartic experience within the beholder, and allowing the viewer to genuinely experience his own humanity.
So there's my caption contest entry, and my dissertation on my caption contest entry. Yep, that's it. |
